It’s that time of year again! MBAC staff has been hustlin’ and bustlin’ preparing for the start of the camp season! While we love having fun, safety always comes first, which is why all of our instructors and camp counselors go through extensive training in order to ensure that campers have the safest and highest quality experiences possible.
With only a week to go until the first day of camp, our staff are completing their American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding certifications, finishing their US Powerboat safety certification courses, participating in inclusion training performed by therapeutic recreation specialists, and practicing sailing and other water skills requirements. In their final week of training new counselors are spending the week in camp-specific training, where they take a look at activities from a camper’s perspective, including camp check-in, and learning in’s and out’s of the various daily camp activities (yes, even the swim assessment).
Check out the video below of our staff getting fired up for camp!
Staff have also received professional development training from sun safety expert and SDSU Professor Dr. Peter Anderson (retired), and from SDSU Child and Family Development professors Dr. Sascha Longstreth and Dr. Sarah Garrity, authors of this book on positive behavior guidance strategies.
With our training sessions coming to a close, we are super excited to get the summer started and meet all of our campers soon! It’s going to be a great summer and we can’t wait!
