SEA KAYAKING QUALIFICATION

This course introduces participants to the basics of sea kayaking in a sit-inside kayak. You will get instruction and practice with wet exits and rescues, and get checked off for sea kayak rentals at MBAC. Our instructors offer guidance and personalized feedback as you learn, allowing you to make the most of the class.

What Will I Learn?

Following on-land instruction you will practice your skills on the water. Participants will receive a demonstration of a technique and then individualized assistance when practicing it themselves. Once wet exits and rescues have been covered, participants will receive a brief tour of the bay and engage in skills-based activities. Topics include:

  • Safety on the water
    • Personal flotation devices (PFDs)
    • Conditions assessment
    • Paddling safely in a group
  • Parts of the sea kayak and paddle
  • Trip Equipment
    • Spray skirts
    • Bilge pumps
    • Paddle floats
  • Wet exits
  • Self and assisted rescue techniques
  • Control & stability techniques
  • Beginning paddle strokes & maneuvers
  • Tracking
