MOONLIGHT PADDLING

This course gives participants the opportunity to paddle 2.5 miles around Mission Bay’s Vacation Island. You will be accompanied by instructors and be allowed to cross under bridges that are normally off-limits to renters. The paddle lasts through sunset and extends into the night, allowing participants the chance to paddle by moonlight. Our instructors offer guidance and personalized feedback as you paddle, allowing you to make the most of the class.

What Will I Learn?

Following some brief on-land review, participants will receive a 1.5-hour long tour around Vacation Island while the sun sets and the moon rises. At the halfway point, participants will beach their equipment and be able to stretch, use a restroom, or take pictures. Topics of review include:

  • Safety on the water
    • Personal flotation devices (PFDs)
    • Conditions assessments
    • Paddling safely in a group
  • Parts of the board and paddle
  • Control and stability techniques
  • Beginning paddle strokes and maneuvers

Is this the right class for me?

The Moonlight Paddle is a great choice for comfortable paddlers who are looking to improve their skills and receive immediate feedback on their technique. It is also good for those who would like a chance to explore the bay after normal rental hours, in different conditions.

Requirements

  • The Moonlight Paddle is an entry-level class with no required prerequisites or prior experience.
  • This class is open to all participants aged 14 and up.
  • A general liability waiver is required to participate. Anyone under 18 must have a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.
  • Participants must acknowledge that they are water-safe (able to swim 50 meters and comfortably tread water).

It is strongly recommended that you feel comfortable on a paddleboard or kayak before signing up for this course. It is two hours of paddling, with one rest/stretch break granted at the halfway point. Additionally, you will be paddling in the dark, which is a great way to take in the beauty of the bay, but not if you’re uncomfortable using the equipment.

How to Prepare

Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers. The temperature can feel much cooler than expected once you are on the water, so it is a good idea to bring a jacket, even on warm nights. Lifejackets are provided.

When launching from and returning to the beach, you will get your feet and calves wet. It is unlikely that you will end up in the water during this class, but it is possible, so we recommend wearing clothes that can get wet, a towel, and a change of clothes.

Bring sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. MBAC has a water bottle refilling station, and there are a number of restaurants nearby. However, keep in mind that food and drink are not available for purchase at MBAC.

Parking can be a challenge at MBAC, especially during the summer months. Please visit our parking page for more information.

What's Next?

MBAC has a number of options if you would like to continue paddling after completing this course. MBAC offers stand up paddle board rentals, kayak rentals, and an affordable paddling membership.

If you enjoyed this course and would like to become more comfortable with paddling, we recommend signing up for an Introduction to Kayaking, Introduction to Stand Up Paddling, or Intermediate Stand Up Paddling course based on your skill level.
