As a result of the difficult economic climate, hunger is at an all time high in San Diego. In response, the 74,000 students, staff and faculty of SDSU, UCSD, CSUSM, and PLNU are doing their part to help feed the community by participating in the Colleges Rock Hunger contest Oct. 5 – 28, hosted by the San Diego Food Bank. Each university is competing to see which campus community can collect the most food donations to kick off the SD Food Bank Holiday Drive.

Coming soon to a theater near you: Chasing Mavericks
A new surfing centric movie is slated to come out later this month that tells the true story of surf legend Jay Moriarty and his quest to conquer some of the world’s largest waves. Chasing Mavericks tells the story of a then 15 year old Jay, as he discovers the incredible Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, and enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a friendship that transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing.
Judging from the trailer the film is sure to include plenty of surfing cliches and Hollywood cheesiness, however, Jay’s story is a surf legend and should provide for some great entertainment if done well. According to the film’s website, the movie was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing real wave footage ever captured on film.
If anything, the story should generate an interest in surfing in general and may inspire many new surfers to charge the waves.
Chasing Mavericks comes out on October 26 to a theater near you.
Former MBAC Lead Surfing Instructor hired as MBAC Instructional Supervisor
The Mission Bay Aquatic Center is pleased to announce the hiring of former Lead Surfing Instructor Justin Baar as the MBAC Instructional Supervisor. Justin will oversee the day to day instructional activities at MBAC and will serve as the primary supervisor of MBAC instructional staff. His responsibilities also include developing curriculum for all MBAC instructional classes, purchasing equipment, and exploring new class offerings for MBAC.
Justin’s employment at MBAC began 7 years ago when he started as a surf instructor while studying art at SDSU. Since that time he has filled several roles at MBAC including working as a camp counselor, serving as a camp lead, assisting with marketing, and serving as Lead Surfing Instructor. His enthusiasm for the activities at MBAC and his creative mindset is a great asset to MBAC programming. Participation in surfing programs at MBAC has exploded under his leadership.

Mission Possible: Clean the Bay Day
San Diego Coastkeeper will be hosting a beach cleanup in Mission Bay on Saturday, October 27th, 2012 in partnership with SeaWorld Rescue and SeaWorld Cares. The organizations are coordinating an on-the-water and shoreline cleanup of Mission Bay.
Mission Possible: Clean the Bay was developed to help protect the marine habitat and wildlife while encouraging people to get out and enjoy our water. We all know that it is important to our local businesses and tourism, supporting boating, swimming, and fishing activities year round. Our boating and paddling communities are some of the groups most impacted by the presence of marine debris, so they’d love your help. The event will start at 8:00 a.m from South Shores Park and run until 11am. Participants are encouraged to bring their own boats, kayaks or paddleboards to help with the effort on the water. For those not bringing watercraft, shoreline help is welcome, too! San Diego Coastkeeper will be providing all cleanup materials and SeaWorld has generously provided prizes for participants. Following the event from 11am-noon, they will tally the trash count, distribute prizes and have food for participants from Rubios! San Diego Coastkeeper is looking forward to a great day keeping our waterways and beaches clean and hope to see you out there! There’s still time to enroll for fall semester-long watersports classes
Whether you need an additional unit to fill up your schedule, or you’d prefer to not worry about the credit and just take a class for fun, there is still time to enroll in one of the semester-long classes offered at MBAC this fall. If you’re adding a class for credit be sure to add the unit by September 12.
Semester-long classes are offered in all of our sports including wakeboarding, surfing, stand up paddling, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, and rowing. Many sports offer intermediate and advanced level classes so you can continue to develop your skills and earn additional units.
SDSU students can pick up add codes on campus this week on Campanile Walk, or can pick one up at the MBAC during their first class session. You can also get an add code by phone by calling (858) 488-1000 between the hours of 8am and 6pm Tuesday through Sunday.
USD students can learn more about the classes at the EDRC Watersports Class Orientation on the USD campus on Monday, September 10, from 1pm-2pm, or can stop by the MBAC tent in front of the UC from September 5-12.
